Power Trip Repair: Understanding Why Your Power Trips
A power trip is a safety mechanism that cuts off electricity when a protective device detects a fault. Depending on the device, it helps protect against electric shock, electrical overload, or short circuits.
When a power trip occurs, it is important to identify the cause. Common causes range from faulty appliances to an overloaded electrical circuit.
After the cause has been safely resolved, the circuit breaker may be reset to restore power. If the breaker cannot be reset or continues to trip, an electrical fault may still be present. Repeated tripping does not necessarily mean there is a power surge.
Do not repeatedly reset the breaker or attempt to repair wiring yourself. Engage an electrician to inspect the system promptly and ensure it is safe. If you notice smoke, sparking, a burning smell, or water near the electrical panel, keep away and do not attempt a reset.
*Note: Prices may vary slightly depending on complexity, wiring condition, and after-hours emergency timing. Exact quote confirmed upfront before work commences.
Power Trip Causes & Triggers
Electrical Overload
With more electronic gadgets and appliances in Singapore homes, it is easy to overload a circuit. Running too many devices—especially high-power appliances—from the same circuit or socket can draw more current than the wiring is designed to carry. The circuit breaker trips to protect against overheating. Avoid overloading sockets or extension leads.
Faulty Appliances, Circuit Breakers & Power Sockets
Appliances, sockets, circuit breakers, and their connections can deteriorate over time. Damaged insulation, loose connections, short circuits, or electrical leakage can cause power trips. A qualified electrician can identify whether the problem lies with an appliance, a socket, the protective device, or the wiring.
Electrical System Fault
If power trips occur during lightning or heavy rain, arrange an inspection promptly. Lightning-related disturbances or rainwater entering electrical equipment may trigger a trip, but the cause needs to be checked. Do not touch wet electrical fittings or try to reset a wet distribution board.
Our Power Trip Repair Process
Ask and isolate. We ask what tripped, when, and what was running, then isolate the affected circuit or appliance.
Test. We test the circuit, the socket or fitting and the protective devices. Earth leakage and short circuits need different tests, so the symptoms guide what we check first.
Find the fault. We locate the appliance, socket, connection or circuit at fault and explain it plainly, with photos where useful.
Quote, then repair. You see the options and the price before work proceeds. Repairs can include a socket or fitting replacement, a protective device replacement or isolating a damaged circuit.
Re-test. After the repair we check that the circuit holds before we leave.
ELCB, RCCB or MCB: Which Switch Tripped?
Open the DB box door only if it is dry and undamaged, and never remove the inner cover. Look at which switch is down:
MCB (miniature circuit breaker) protects one circuit from overload or short circuit. A tripped MCB often means too much load on that circuit, or a fault on it.
ELCB / RCCB (earth leakage protection) detects current leaking to earth and cuts the supply to reduce electric shock risk. A tripping ELCB or RCCB often points to a faulty appliance, a damp or damaged socket or deteriorating wiring.
Main switch cuts the entire unit. If it trips repeatedly, stop using it and call an electrician.
Naming the switch that tripped when you call us helps us prepare, and speeds up diagnosis.
When Is a Power Trip an Emergency?
Call straight away, and keep away from the panel, if you see smoke or sparks, smell burning, notice a hot or discoloured socket, or if water has reached the DB box or sockets. For urgent situations see our 24-hour emergency electrician page. If there is fire or immediate danger, call the emergency services first.
Everything you need to know about our power trip repair service in Singapore.
First, switch off all main power appliances. Unplug recently used or wet appliances. Then try resetting the ELCB switch in your DB box. If it trips instantly again, do not force it and call our emergency electrician immediately.
We have licensed electricians stationed across all regions in Singapore. Typically, emergency response time is subject to availability.
We maintain fully transparent pricing starting from $50. A minor checking fee applies for diagnosis, which is fully waived if you proceed with the recommended repair.
The usual causes are an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance, a damaged or damp socket, an earth leakage or a failing protective device. The cause has to be located; resetting the switch repeatedly only delays the repair.
Our power trip diagnosis starts from $50 with no GST. ELCB / RCCB replacement and testing is indicatively SGD $120 to $180, main circuit breaker replacement SGD $140 to $220 and short circuit isolation from SGD $90. The final price depends on the fault and is confirmed before work starts.
You may switch the tripped ELCB or RCCB back on once from outside the DB box after unplugging recently used appliances, if the panel is dry and there is no burning smell, smoke or sparking. If it trips again, leave it off and call an electrician. Do not remove the panel cover.
You can call or WhatsApp at any hour. Arrival time depends on your location and current jobs, and after-hours timing may affect the rate, so we confirm availability and the charge when you call.
