Power Socket / Point Rewire & Installation
Power sockets play an essential role in everyday life. With more phones, laptops, tablets and other electronic devices in our homes, conveniently located power points make charging and using equipment easier. Installing additional sockets can help reduce reliance on extension leads, provided the circuit has sufficient capacity.
Types of Power Socket in Singapore
The standard household socket commonly used in Singapore is the three-pin Type G socket. Its earth connection provides a protective path for fault current when used with appropriately earthed equipment. Together with suitable circuit protection, this helps reduce electric shock risks if a fault occurs.
Some double-insulated appliances use approved two-pin plugs and do not require an earth connection. The correct plug, socket and protective devices should be selected for the equipment and installation.
Electrical Point Rewiring to a Different Location
Moving a power point is a common request when furniture layouts or household needs change. Additional sockets may be needed near workspaces, charging areas or appliances. An electrician should assess the existing circuit and wiring before relocating or adding a point.
There are two common methods for routing wiring to a new location:
Exposed Wiring Method
Surface-mounted wiring is routed through protective trunking or conduit along the wall. It is generally faster and more affordable than concealed wiring because it requires less wall alteration. The trunking remains visible and can be planned to keep the installation neat.
Concealed Wiring Method
Concealed wiring keeps cables out of sight within suitable wall or ceiling routes. It may require wall chasing, reinstatement and painting, making the work more disruptive and costly. It is usually best planned during renovation, subject to the property's construction and any required approvals.
Common Power Socket Problems
Short Circuit
Water entering a socket, damaged insulation or deteriorated wiring can create an unintended electrical connection and cause a short circuit. Stop using a damaged or wet socket and arrange an inspection.
Overloaded Circuit
An overload occurs when connected devices draw more current than the circuit, socket or extension lead is designed to handle. It is different from a voltage surge. Overloading can cause overheating and trigger protective devices, especially when several high-power appliances share one outlet.
Faulty Outlet
Wear, corrosion, loose connections or damaged contacts can cause a socket to malfunction. If a socket becomes hot, sparks, shows scorch marks or holds a plug loosely, stop using it and contact an electrician.
Hire a Professional Electrician
Choosing an electrician can feel unfamiliar when you rarely need electrical work. We explain the available repair or installation options and provide a quote before you decide to proceed.
For socket installation, relocation and wiring repairs, engage a suitably qualified electrician rather than attempting the work yourself. Your safety is our priority: professional assessment, correct installation and testing help reduce the risk of electric shock, overheating and fire.
